White constellation
A view of the the UAE Pavilion by Santiago Calatrava at the Expo 2020 Dubai, UAE. Conceived by the Swiss-Spanish architect Santiago Calatrava the UAE Pavilion’s design featured 28 moveable wings. At the centre of the structure there was a sphere-shaped void that served as an auditorium with a capacity of 200. Its continuum form was a symbol of resilience and of a boundless future embracing a dialogue among different cultures. In terms of aesthetics, it stroke me for the interesting play of light and shadow, with an evocative charm. As an architectural photographer, I have done my best to translate the silent elegance of the structure into a somewhat dreamy compositional rigor, enhancing the whiteness and its metaphorical sense of purity that the place transmitted to me.
